Le mot étui désigne l'élément d'une munition qui solidarise tous les autres, et abrite la charge propulsive et l'amorce. Il désigne ce composant lorsqu'il est destiné à une arme individuelle, donc de calibre inférieur à 14 millimètres (pour une arme contemporaine) ou 20 millimètres (pour une arme ancienne). Le mot douille est préféré pour les autres armes, en particulier les fusils à âme lisse, et les obus de pièces d'artillerie.
